De Jah Groove

Rock Bottom Jackpot

There’s that unmistakeable buzz in the air… you know the one, something hot is about to happen. You could be anywhere – Fitzroy, Byron, Bondi – but the feeling is the same. Six musicians, with fire in their bellies, take the stage, and hundreds of hip-shakers shuffle forward, ready to party. You hold your breath, not taking another for fear of missing that precious first note. An explosion of sound fills the room, and from the first downbeat the crowd begins to pump. You’ve reached a place where you can leave your troubles at the door, let go, and have a bloody great time. Sweat is flying (onstage and off), and the frenzied party continues through the set. Someone up the back of the room begins to scream and in a whirl of reggae, hip-hop, Latino vibes, wife-beater singlets and VB, the crowd jumps and gyrates until the break of dawn. Or until the venue kicks them out, and they take the party home with them. You wake up the next morning, a smile on your face and the words “renegade reggae’’ written on your arm. Blazing horn lines fly through your mind, along with explosive percussion solos, hot and heavy drum and bass and rocking guitar. But the question still remains… “Where am I?”
