The Green Mist
Dirt Weed
Dirt Weed follows on from The Green Mists debut album Next Stop Antartica. Again, Dirt Weed is a collection of songs by Tasmanian based songwriter Julien Poulsen, recorded at Birdland Studios by Lindsay Gravina and a host of musical collaborations he calls The Green Mist
Most of the music on Dirt Weed is inspired by a long drive across Australia. As with Next Stop Antartica Poulsons songs and swaggering instrumentals draw lifeblood from the environments they are set in, filmic, epic music across a vast space where sometimes tales of inhabitants - from historical figures to present day characters - merge and segway from track to track. The mise-en-scene of Dirt weed sets a hard bitten place, its opening scene established with a monstrous blues swagger and Tracey Redheads voice hitting hard on track one, If you Change Your Mind.
Dirt Weed traverses an emotional desert with tracks like Nothing Grows and American Taliban but floods with beauty and lushness on the albums most radio friendly song She Always Takes The Slow Way.
Paul Milehams slide guitars feature throughout the album as do the vocals of Tracey Redhead and Helena Ashton - Fallen and Change Is Gonna Come. Helen Cattanach of Moler and Spencer P Jones Escape Committee underscores the album with its loping groove.
